Syzygy
The 11 o'clock Wednesday Scrabble group has been playing a different word game for several weeks now. The game is called 'syzygy' which is the word describing when the earth, sun, and moon are aligned. It is a simple-to-learn game and it's a lot of fun.

Gourmet Club
Alan has talked about his plan to start a Gourmet Club at CherryWood. He said that he and Adrian have some exotic recipes and intend to inaugurate a series of very fancy dinners for a small group. At first it will be limited to twenty people and the first dinner is scheduled for February 3rd. I assume it will be publicized after Christmas. For more details, ask Alan.
Sapporo. Japan
Yes, it WAS a neat trip! Mary, Bob, and I will be presenting a program about it at the Travel Club on Tuesday, February 16, 2010.

Sapporo. Japan
On Saturday, October 31st three of us (Bob Eisenhart, my wife Mary, and I) will be heading to Japan. As you may know we are part of the delegation going to Sapporo to participate in the Fiftieth Anniversary Commemoration of the sister-city relationship between Portland and Sapporo. Should be a neat trip!

History class
On Monday, September 28th Dr. Tucker Jackson will give another class. This time (his third at CherryWood) Dr. Jackson's subject is the History of Immigration in the United States. The class will be held for four successive Mondays in the Board Room. Mary and I have enjoyed the intellectual stimulation of this teacher. I recommend it to everyone who wants to exercise their brain.

Newspaper
Several of us are starting a newspaper for and by CherryWood residents. Publication date for the first issue is tentatively set for March 1, 2009. We need more people for the staff. Specific skills needed are writers, creators of puzzles, writers of jokes, and people to assist with folding and distributing the newspaper.
The writers are reporters, willing and able to interview people or research stories and write them up.
Our poetry editor, Elwyn Williams, is looking for poets. If you write poetry, call him at 1-503-265-8331.
Other volunteers can call Dick Lutz at 1-503-580-0485 or e-mail at dickbook@earthlink.net.
The paper will also carry free Classified Ads strictly for CherryWood residents. The ads will feature items for sale or to give away and services available to residents. Call Dick Lutz re this.

Intellectual stimulation
A 2-session course is being presented in the CherryWood board room at 6 pm on Monday, January 19th, and Monday, January 26th. The course is on the Counter Culture movements of the 60s and 70s. It is taught by the historian Tucker Jackson. Dr. Jackson taught a course last year on various aspects of the Lewis & Clark expedition, particularly the political ramifications. I found the course very interesting and Dr. Jackson an excellent teacher.
The courses are presented by the organization OASIS and are FREE to CherryWood residents. I recommend that you sign up (in the Wellness Center) for this course.
