Toastmasters

At the next Residents Meeting (Nov. 19, 2008) a man will discuss the possibility of setting up a Toastmasters group here at CherryWood. His presentation will be brief, but residents can sign up to attend a meeting to explore the idea in more detail.

In case you don't know, Toastmasters is an organization made up of local chapters that meet regularly to practice their public speaking skills. It is also a social club.

I know there are several of us that are interested but I urge all residents to consider signing up.

What ever happened to the plan of creating a Photo Directory of CherryWood Residents?

Jollyball

I had a lot of fun yesterday by playing the new game that the wellness center is offering. Jollyball is sit-down volleyball played with a big balloon instead of a volleyball. Residents in walkers can play it, but you don't have to be in a walker to enjoy it. It meets at 10:30 on Thursday in the Community Room. I recommend it to all readers of this blog!

Cell phone

I'm starting to get annoying marketing calls on my cell phone. This in spite of the fact that I 'm registered on the 'do not call' list. What can I do about this?

Lewis & Clark

Mary and I attended the first of four classes the other night on the subject of Lewis & Clark's journey.  This class was VERY interesting and I hope CherryWood puts on more like this.  Mindy should be commended for arranging this course.  I'm a firm believer in New York University's motto—LEARNING SHOULD NEVER END.

GOLF TOURNAMENT

On Friday, May 30th, CherryWood hosted a putting tournament. A number of folks came from Town Center Village (our sister facility) and a grand time was had by all. The champion golfer from CherryWood was Gene Eckart. Gene claimed he made three holes-in-one, but I'm not so sure-)

HOW TO GET ON THIS BLOG

Finally, I can guarantee that anyone can easily post on this blog. All you have to do is send an e-mail to me at dickbook@earthlink.net  I will then register your e-mail address which will make you a 'blog author.' The part of your address that appears before the @ will then appear on the blog and you can easily post.

Please disregard my blog entry "To post on blog, try this."

My thanks to Ted Dec for helping me resolve the problem of posting.

HELP!

Will anyone who has successfully posted on this blog tell us all how they did it?

If you simply want to comment on a post that's on the blog, hit the word 'comments' right after the post and type your comment.  However, I don't know how to add a new post to the blog.

Correction of previous entry

Although the front desk does have a resident list they do NOT include phone numbers. However, you can get the number of any resident by calling the front desk.

Best Time of Year

Spring is the best time of year
When all things dormant
Rise up and cheer
Sunshine! Rain!
Is what we need
In order for us
To succeed.

Tulips, daffodils
They rise up tall
Their  colors magical
One and all.
Then shrubs and trees
Their blooms appear.
Spring!
The best time of the year!

Poem by Ann Mellish
North Vancouver, British Columbia

The above poem is on the back cover of the magazine BIRDS & BLOOMS. This magazine will be available in the CherryWood library.

Resident list available

Some CherryWood residents are not aware that a resident's list (with phone numbers) is available at the Front Desk. It is updated periodically.

The Book of Gifts

This book has just been received from a friend in Arizona. She put the book together from prayers, poems, and personal accounts of women in her church group. Here are a couple of 'gifts':

Life is like a journey taken on a train, with a pair of

passengers at each window pane.

I may sit beside you all the journey through, or - I may sit

elsewhere never knowing you.

But if fate should make me sit by your side,

Let's be pleasant passengers.

It's so short a ride.

Shirley Slotvig

And a favorite prayer of Joe & Judy Bricher—

Grant me o Lord  my God, a mind to know you,

a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you,

conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in

waiting for you and a hope of finally embracing you.

St. Thomas Aquinas

Mary and I are donating the book to the Cherrywood Library. I urge you to

visit the library

and read more 'gifts.'

Sunday night dinner

The manicotti was good tonight. It seems that Sunday night dinner is usually kinda bland.

A REMINDER

I simply want to remind everyone that the Grill in the Village Square serves breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I've run into several residents who are unaware of this. That is a shame as the meals are VERY good (particularly the pancakes).

WELCOME

This is the blog for the residents of CherryWood Village, a retirement community in Portland, Oregon. It is expected that the residents will contribute material to this blog. Examples of the kind of stuff that might be added include jokes, poems, prayers, and personal accounts. Or, whatever comes to mind.
